As variable as an MPV, as robust as a light truck: the Vario is the classic model in the Mercedes-Benz van range. A classic model that is also cutting-edge when it comes to the crucial matters of fuel consumption and emissions – thanks to the BlueEFFICIENCY technology BlueTEC. With it the Vario meets the requirements of the EURO 5 emissions standard, whilst optimising the engine with regard to performance characteristics and fuel consumption.
This technology has been driving well and truly in the fast lane since 2005 – in Mercedes-Benz trucks. And the exhaust gas aftertreatment method SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) also reduces the NOX emissions from the Vario’s high-displacement diesel engines, by feeding the exhaust emissions through a catalytic converter, where it mixes them with the water-based additive AdBlue®. During this process, nitrogen oxides are turned into nitrogen and water. The result is compliance with the stringent EURO 5 emissions standard.
Incidentally, in everyday the only indication that you have BlueTEC, one of the most advanced exhaust gas technologies, on board is the separate filling neck for the AdBlue® additive. It is situated in the direct vicinity of the fuel filling neck, and while the diesel fuel flows into the tank, AdBlue® additive is poured into the SCR tank – no extra time being required for this. Its 18-litre volume ensures that AdBlue® only has to be added about every third time the tank is filled up with diesel.
